What is a Web Designer and Where do they Work?

Working with practicing professionals from industry, the U.S. Departments of Education and Labor the not-for-profit WOW organization has been working diligently to define and support the Web design and development community. To that end, WOW has defined the role of the Web designer ranging from the entry level to the practicing professional within large corporations. Responsibilities of Web designers vary depending on the size of the company that you work for. Small business Web designers for example are required to wear “multiple hats” that include a wide variety of responsibilities ranging from the creative, Web programming and development. Web marketing, customer service and support to project management.

As a certifying organization, WOW defines the role of a Web designer as follows:

WOW Certified Web Designer Apprentice (CWDSA-apprentice): Web Designer Apprentices are familiar with the visual arts and are learning to create images and designs that capture and keep visitors’ interest. They present aesthetically enticing designs that meet the requirements and preferences of their audience.

WOW Certified Web Designer Associate (CWDSA): Web Designer Associates are proficient in the visual arts and creating the images and designs that capture and keep visitors’ interest. They present aesthetically enticing designs that meet the requirements and preferences of their audience.

WOW Certified Professional Web Designer (CPWDS): Professional Web Designers are masters of the visual arts and creating look and feel that drives a successful website, that capture and keep visitors’ interest and usable designs that meet or exceed the requirements and preferences of their audience.
